Junior U18 Team

The Belarusian junior (U-18) hockey team's history is not a long one and has had many ups and downs over the last years. Belarus U-18 Team was founded in 1992.

After the collapse of the Soviet Union, junior teams of the newly founded independent countries were invited to play in the IIHF World U-18 Championship of 1993, C-Pool. Then Belarusian juniors were making great progress and soon in 1995 the team promoted to the elite division of the World U-18 IIHF championships. In 1995 in Berlin Belarus lost all the three games in the preliminary round (against Sweden, Finland and Switzerland). In the elimination round, however, the team had a tie with Norway to end up in 7th place overall due to a better goals' difference, thus keeping their place in the top pool.

At the 1996 IIHF World U-18 Championship in Russia, the team finished in the last position, and they were relegated to the Division I for the next year. In April 1999, our juniors once again promoted to the 2000 IIHF World U-18 Championship and the following year they relegated to Division I. In 2001 Belarusians demonstrated outstanding results in B-Pool and were back to the world's elite for the period of three years. Since the fall with the only victory against Norway in 2004 IIHF World U-18 Championship the team has been in the Division I with the jump up to the top pool in 2006.

5th place in 2002 IIHF World U-18 Championship in Slovakia is the Belarusian junior team's best result so far. That year such strong players as Konstantin Zakharov, Andrei Kostitsyn, Mikhail Grabovski and Timofei Filin took part in the event, gaining precious experience of playing in the world's elite.
